The WorldTempus team has a field day testing the Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver 2024

As someone who lives right next to a lake, I like nothing better than a grab-and-go automatic watch with dive-grade water resistance for when I go swimming or do standup paddleboarding. The Pontos S Diver fits the bill nicely.

Inside of it ticks the ML115 calibre, essentially the Sellita SW200-1 which in turn is based on the ETA 2824-2. That means you’ve got a reliable, Swiss-made workhorse that is easily serviced. The power reserve is 38 hours, but the bi-directional rotor means it self-winds quickly and efficiently.

One cool feature of the Pontos S Diver is the internal rotating bezel operated using the screw-down crown at 2 o’clock. A bezel like this is a bit more fiddly to set than an external one, but it means the Pontos S Diver doesn’t have a typical dive watch look, helping it to stand out from the crowd while staying in line with Maurice Lacroix’s “urban” design language.

The Pontos S Diver is the ultimate “Desk Diver” – technologically designed to reach the depths of the ocean, while aesthetically imagined for the city, providing the best of both worlds. If truth be told, only a small minority of dive watch owners actually go diving with their watch, and if they do, it is usually as a backup to a dive computer. And yet, the rugged design, super specs, and adventure lifestyle connected to these tool watches have made them extremely popular over the years.

Today, the trend for large chunky watches is starting to wane, however, putting the Pontos S Diver in the perfect position to please with its 42mm case size and sharp design. Available in bronze or black DLC stainless steel, the watches feature a look that oozes adventure but also includes an elegant urban coolness about them, which perhaps better reflects today’s tastes. Make no mistake, this watch is not scared of the water and has all the tech specs you would expect from a divers’ watch. I took it for a spin on the streets of Geneva and loved how it felt on the wrist. For anyone looking for a new watch this summer, I definitely recommend that you check it out.

Confession: I’m unreasonably obsessed with bronze watches and textured dials. I can’t explain it; the closest thing I can relate it to is the predilection that toddlers have of putting things in their mouths without any sort of consideration whatsoever. Am I saying I want to put this watch in my mouth? Maybe I am, and maybe I’m not, but that’s not important here. What I’m saying is that the Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver in bronze, for ineffable reasons, triggers something in me that suppresses my higher cognitive abilities. The texture of the black dial is simply pleading to be touched, and the fact that we are separated by a subtly domed disc of sapphire crystal is slightly sacriligious in my view. There is an obvious rationale behind not allowing us to lay grubby fingers directly on the watch dial, but I can’t help regretting it slightly anyway. That said, you always want what you can’t have, so I think Maurice Lacroix knew exactly what they were doing with the design of this piece.

I don’t know about you, but as we reach the halfway point of the year and summer is finally upon the horizon, I couldn’t be more excited! I am simply dying to take off, soak up some sun, lounge on a pristine white sand beach, sip on a refreshing cocktail and let all of my stress drift away, like waves crashing on the shore… So, when the bronze Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver 2024 rolled up at the WorldTempus office this week, it felt like a capsule, condensing all my summer fantasies in a delicious bronze dial. It’s sporty, sure, but with its golden-hued indexes and hands paired with a vintage brown leather strap, I can easily imagine it enjoying the “far niente” withme, two peas in a holiday pod. And if I’m feeling a little more adventurous, its 300-meter water resistance means I can just strap it on for an impromptu scuba diving lesson. Just a few more weeks…

I tried on the black Pontos S Diver featuring a black DLC stainless steel case, black grained dial and black rubber strap. So full black (with only a few yellow details)! This watch can be worn in so many different ways! Although it is a dive watch, Maurice Lacroix designed it to perfectly fit a city lifestyle. Picture yourself at brunch on a Sunday morning, drinking lemonade, or casually on a Tuesday evening eating tacos. Joana Mäder from the ML crew wore it really well with a leather jacket. If you don’t believe me, check out the Pontos S Diver press release!
