WorldTempus gets in the mood for summer this week with colorful watches inspired by ice cream flavors

It isn’t always easy to come up with an idea for our Monday morning editorial. Our Editor-in-Chief Suzanne Wong often suggests checking if it is an interesting international day of something, like Earth Day, International Women’s Day, etc…so I did a little digging around and it seems that July 1st is the National Day for Creative Ice Cream Flavors in the US. Yes, you read that correctly!

This begs a number of questions. Do we need to raise awareness for the less popular varieties? Are Sweet Avocado Cayenne, Raspberry Balsamic, and Lavender Honey feeling underappreciated? Or is it to promote creativity and innovation in the field? The organizers don’t elaborate, but looking at the pictures, these weird and wonderful flavors come in the most appetizing colors, which started to make me think of all the wonderful colored watch dials we have seen this year.

Take the latest Ressence Type 5L for example, with its full luminescent dial, this timepiece would look great in the hand with a mint choc chip cone or, if we want to celebrate Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day, why not a tub of Glow in the Dark ice cream (yes this is a thing)? The Type 5L was released just last week and is also a fully-fledged divers’ watch so you don’t need to worry if your ice cream starts to melt down your arm, its 100m water resistance has you covered!

Armin Strom’s Gravity Equal Force Ultimate Sapphire Purple conjures up all kinds of exotic flavors with its deep purple dial edition released in celebration of the brand’s 15th anniversary. It is more than just a color, however, the purple-toned mainplate boasts a stunning barleycorn guilloché motif that was created in the dial workshop of revered Finnish watchmaker Kari Voutilainen. According to my research, the Finns are quite partial to blueberry cardamom and salty licorice ice cream, both of which happen to be purple!

Oris’s ProPilot X Calibre 400, with its salmon/peach dial, will definitely have you licking your lips. The brand has been having fun with its dial colors of late. Remember last year’s ProPilot X Kermit Edition with its lime green dial and then there were the pastel-colored Oris Sixty-Five Divers in mint green, cotton candy, and turquoise. For this version, I would pair it with a peach or apricot cone…or if we want to tap into those creative flavors…how about a Honey Date or Salted Pumpkin Seed?

We couldn’t possibly have an ice cream selection without something chocolate-based. This is a color that will never go out of style in the watchmaking world. One of the latest models that caught my eye was this retro-futuristic Carl F. Bucherer Heritage Chronometer, which is a contemporary revival of a 1960s timepiece from the brand’s archives. It comes with an 18-karat rose gold case, brown gradient lacquered dial, and a brown embossed calf leather strap.

And last, but by no means least, check out these fun yummy colors from Richard Mille’s 07-01 Colored Ceramics collection. These timepieces were made for the summer with their bold hues and interesting color combinations. Their design is inspired by the 1980s Italian art and architecture movement called Memphis Design. For the rest, there is all of Richard Mille’s much-loved performance, technicity, and innovation. If these watches were ice creams, they would surely have names like Cardamon Pistachio Kulfi, Lemon Berry, or Mango Mojito!

So, this summer, when you are on vacation and queuing up for an ice cream cone, why not try and match your choice to your watch? We could start a trend #lickmywatch!
