Glashütte Original’s new SeaQ Chronograph “Silver Screen” pairs a stunning black and silvered dial with top-tier stopwatch and dive functionalities

Discreetly unveiled at the recent Geneva Watch Days salon, Glashütte Original’s latest release introduces a fresh chapter to its popular SeaQ Chronograph line-up.

Building on the success of the 2022 debut model in deep blue, the German watchmaker now turns to a more muted palette for its new “Silver Screen” edition. Like the old-school cinema screens that inspired its name, this watch conveys a lot with minimal colour, delivering a timeless statement in black and silver.

Cinematic Dial

At first glance, the SeaQ Chronograph "Silver Screen" might seem like a straightforward black-and-white timepiece. But on closer inspection, you’ll notice that, instead of a white lacquered dial, the Saxon outfit has opted for a galvanic silver treatment to create a luminous stage where precision timekeeping meets rugged diver functionality.

Just as the screens of early cinema maximised light reflection to enhance images thanks to their silver coating, the dial’s matte silver surface ensures optimal legibility, superbly setting off the black-accented displays.

Indeed, the galvanic finish serves as an ideal backdrop for the glossy black borders of the lume-filled hands and indices, as well as for the 30-minute counter and small seconds subdials, which feature refined lathe-cut azuré grooves.

Meanwhile, at 6 o’clock, the iconic Glashütte Original Panorama Date window proudly stands out with white numerals on a black background, further reinforcing the light/dark aesthetic.

Style and Substance

Not just a visual stunner, the SeaQ Chronograph “Silver Screen” is also a high-performance instrument. It features a flyback chronograph, allowing the user to reset and restart the timer with a single push. It is also water resistant to 300 metres, meeting both ISO 6425 and DIN 8306 standards, cementing its credentials as a professional-grade dive watch.

Measuring 43.2mm in diameter and standing at 16.95mm tall, the polished and satin-brushed stainless-steel case makes a pretty bold statement on the wrist. Adding to the appeal, the unidirectional rotating bezel boasts a sleek black ceramic inlay that not only frames the dial but also enhances its subtle reflective quality.

Capable Co-Star

Playing a memorable supporting role to the eye-catching dial is the Calibre 37-23. This in-house automatic movement features a balance wheel with 14K gold adjustment screws and a silicon hairspring that is resistant to magnetic fields and temperature fluctuations. It has a sizeable power reserve of up to 70 hours.

Through the display back and cut-outs in the skeletonised rotor, the brand’s attention to movement decoration is on full display. Finishing details such as Glashütte stripes on the three-quarter plate, polished and bevelled bridge edges and blued screws can all be admired.

Straps Aplenty

One of the standout features of the SeaQ Chronograph “Silver Screen” is the variety of strap options that Glashütte Original offers, ensuring versatility for adventurers and style-conscious collectors alike.

Ideal for diving or outdoor activities, the tropic-style black rubber strap underscores the watch's rugged nature. For those who want to turn heads, the bright orange synthetic textile strap adds a pop of colour that offsets the otherwise understated palette. For a more refined look, there’s also a stainless-steel bracelet featuring an adjustable fine-tuning mechanism, allowing for a snug and comfortable fit.

With additional choices like green rubber and synthetic textile straps in grey, blue or black, the possibilities for personalising the SeaQ Chronograph “Silver Screen” are numerous.

Closing Credits

Priced from CHF 13,500, the SeaQ Chronograph “Silver Screen” sees Glashütte Original once again marrying aesthetic appeal with technical prowess. Whether worn on a deep-sea dive or a night out, its achromatic colourway captures the essence of early cinematic storytelling, proving once again that, sometimes, less truly is more.
