Now, just to clear something up, I am not an advocate for naked swimming. But for the sake of argument, if I were, and I was wearing a watch when I was doing it, I would absolutely want to be sporting the brand-new Ressence Type 5 L! Let me explain.
The Type 5
Ressence’s Type 5 was made for timekeeping in the water. Looking at a watch under the water only works if you look at the dial straight on. If you glance at it from the side, the refraction of light turns the sapphire crystal into a mirror. The Type 5 doesn’t do this; its upper chamber is immersed in 3.57 ml of oil, which cancels out any reflections on the surface.
But that’s not all, since the laws of hydraulics state that a liquid cannot be compressed, the oil compensates for underwater pressure, eliminating the need for a thick case and robust sapphire crystal, which are common in divers’ watches. Add to this the fact that the components are constantly lubricated, they need less power to move, resulting in improved accuracy.

The Added “L” Factor
This new edition to the collection is called the Type 5 L, with the “L” standing for luminescence. Super-LumiNova is not necessarily something new to the world of divers’ timepieces, but here Ressence has gone all out and created a green Grade A Super-LumiNova inlay that creates a full glow-in-the-dark dial. This heightened view enables a clear reading of elapsed time, even when exploring the depths of the ocean, where light is diminished.

Tech Specs
The Type 5 L is an ISO 6425-certified diver’s watch that comes in a 46mm Grade 5 titanium case, which is extremely lightweight, a factor that is also appreciated by scuba divers. It is also water resistant to 100m, as well as magnetic and shock resistant, so it can take on the knocks and bangs that come along with the sport. It features a uni-directional bezel for tracking elapsed time under the water and comes with Ressence’s Compression Lock System on the case back. In terms of the movement, the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROC5 for short) is driven by the minute axle of a customized 2824/2 self-winding caliber that uses magnetic transmission and has a 36-hour power reserve.

Beyond the Functions
Whether you like donning wetsuit and oxygen tanks and heading for the high seas, or like me, prefer a dip in Lake Geneva, this is a watch that is going to stand out on your wrist, especially at nighttime, as the brand’s founder, Benoît Mintiens, explains: “This new beamer and latest addition to our line of mechanical watches is as much a tool watch as a conversation starter thanks to its superior legibility and unique design,” he says. “It’s not just about functionality; the robust Type 5 L brings a sense of quiet assurance and singularity to its wearer, making it a true companion for any endeavor.”
This new luminescent feature will now complement both the Type 5 Night Blue and Black Black models as well as this elegant grey timepiece that will be in the brand’s points of sale from today. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to get your bathing suit on…or not, as the case may be!
