A former banker and the son of architects, Gautier Massonneau launched Trilobe in 2018 with a daring idea: to reimagine how we tell time, without hands, but using rotating discs to give a fresh perspective on time, rhythm and space.
Drawing inspiration from the trilobe symbol, Gautier has built a unique vision where each piece in some way combines architectural motifs with nods to poetry and literature along the way.
In just a few years, the Paris-based brand took home the “Petite Aiguille” prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève for its Nuit Fantastique model, a testament to the originality and appeal of his approach.
But beyond his quest to reinvent time, who is the man behind Trilobe? We explore what drives Gautier Massonneau well beyond watches.
Hi Gautier. So, tell us: What’s your favourite book?
I can’t narrow it down to just one – I have three that really stand out. First, there’s ‘The Three-Body Problem’ by Liu Cixin, an incredible Chinese sci-fi trilogy that offers mind-bending perspectives. Then, ‘The Kindly Ones’ by Jonathan Littell, a haunting story set during the Nazi era. And finally, ‘The Accursed Kings’ by Maurice Druon, which I loved reading as a kid, often under a tree during the summer.
Your favourite movie?
‘Blade Runner’ – its world is just incredible, both in Ridley Scott’s version and Denis Villeneuve’s. And I really enjoyed ‘Parasite’ by Bong Joon-ho, a brilliantly sharp film about class dynamics.

Your favourite music?
My music taste is pretty varied. I listen to French electro artist Rone and I’m also into South African music, like Johnny Clegg and Mango Groove. I love exploring different sounds from around the world.
Your favourite food?
I love trying new flavors, whether it’s Georgian cuisine or classic French. Paris is a culinary haven and luckily, my wife shares this passion for great food.
Your favourite drink?
During the day, I stick to water, but in the evening, I’ll go for a craft beer or a nice white Burgundy.
Your favourite holiday destination?
Lake Annecy in France, where I can revisit the family holiday home and enjoy childhood memories. I used to build forts with my cousins there – I love sharing this place with my own kids, showing them the things that I loved.

Your favourite TV show?
I don’t actually watch TV, but I’m into podcasts.
So, what’s your favourite podcast?
‘Les Grands Reportages’ on Radio France Internationale. They take a deep dive into global topics, from changes in Mongolian laws to coffee culture in Africa. It transports me around the world.

Your favourite piece of clothing or sartorial accessory?
My boat shoes. They’re stylish, practical and work for everything – from a casual walk to the office.
Your favourite activity that you do in your free time?
Spending time with my family. I discover new activities with my kids and get to share in their interests.
Tell us something about you that might surprise us.
I spent two years in Japan and helped with the clean-up efforts after the 2011 tsunami. It was a life-changing experience.
What’s one item (not a watch) that you can’t live without? Or that you can’t go anywhere without?
My earphones. Music goes with me everywhere and without them, I feel a bit lost.
What is on your ‘bucket list’ (an activity, accomplishment or destination that you hope to do or visit before you exit this world)?
I’d love to take a trip to space and look back at Earth from way up there. Maybe in 30 years, if it becomes more accessible.

Who is someone who has inspired you in your life and/or career. How did they inspire you?
My parents. They taught me the value of hard work and taking risks, as creative entrepreneurs.
Name a famous person or historical figure, dead or alive, that you would like to have lunch with. Why?
Napoleon Bonaparte. I’d love to sit down with him for his boldness and genius and see how his mind worked.

What was the first watch you remember owning? What was special about it?
My first watch was a Trilobe! It was an engagement gift from my wife. It’s incredibly special to me – it was the very first piece in our Les Matinaux collection, with a unique starry sky depicted on the dial.
And finally, a wrist check: What watch are you currently wearing? And what do you like about it?
Today, I’m wearing Trilobe’s Les Matinaux L’Heure Exquise in titanium with blue dial. It has a moonphase and a scattering of stars that add a poetic touch to the dial.
