Jean-François Mojon holds a rare dual role in the watchmaking world. As the master watchmaker at Cyrus and managing director of Chronode – a company he founded to design high-end movements for some of the most prestigious brands – his technical brilliance has helped shape modern horology.
Known for its bold and intricate timepieces like the Etheral Twin Orbital Tourbillon and the Klepcys Réveil, Cyrus has benefitted from Mojon’s visionary leadership. His ability to blend cutting-edge mechanics with avant-garde design has helped establish Cyrus as a brand that challenges convention while honouring traditional watchmaking craft.
But who is the man behind these remarkable creations? In this edition of “Downtime”, we step away from the complexity of tourbillons, chronographs and alarm watches – well, almost – to discover more about Jean-François’s life beyond the workshop.
From his love of vintage cars to an inspiring journey he hopes to embark on, Mojon offers us a glimpse into the passions that drive his relentless creativity.
Hello, Jean-François. So, tell us: What is your favourite book?
‘The Einstein Enigma’ by José Rodrigues dos Santos. It’s an astounding book that explores the possible workings of the universe.

‘Dead Poets Society’ by Peter Weir. It’s a powerful ode to freedom!

Your favourite album?
I particularly enjoy ‘The Sound of Silence’ by Simon & Garfunkel. Ah, the sixties!
Your favourite food?
Asian cuisine in general, for its flavours and its ability to transport the senses.
Your favourite drink?
A good beer. For no particular reason!

Your favourite holiday destination?
Italy, for its culture, cuisine and history.
Your favourite TV show?
I’m not really a fan of television.
Your favourite piece of clothing or sartorial accessory?
Quite simply, a pair of shorts for summer days!

Cycling, to stay in shape while enjoying the magnificent landscapes of the Jura.

Tell us something about you that might surprise us.
I’m a fan of vintage cars.
What’s one item (not a watch) that you can’t live without? Or that you can’t go anywhere without?
A good book.
What is on your ‘bucket list’ (an activity, accomplishment or destination that you hope to do or visit before you exit this world)?
I’d love to walk the Camino de Santiago, starting from Geneva.
Who is someone who has inspired you in your life and/or career. How did they inspire you?
Günter Blümlein, with whom I had the opportunity to work: a true leader with a global vision, charisma and deeply inspiring!

Name a famous person or historical figure, dead or alive, that you would like to have lunch with. Why?
John Harrison, a remarkable watchmaker, so he could tell me about his life and how he approached the numerous technical and existential challenges he faced.
What was the first watch you remember owning? What was special about it?
It was a Tissot F1 with both analogue and digital displays, a gift from my parents. I was fascinated by its design and double display.

And finally, a wrist check: What watch are you currently wearing? And what do you like about it?
A Cyrus Klepcys Chronograph, for its design and bold character.
