WorldTempus sits down with Zenith's CEO to discuss 2025 and the brand's 160th anniversary.

The new Defy Skyline Chronograph is strikingly architectural. What was the inspiration behind it?

This is our first skeleton version of the El Primero 3600, and we wanted to make a bold statement. We introduced the Skyline chronograph at Watches & Wonders last year and now we’re cementing its place in the collection with this spectacular evolution, unveiled during LVMH Watch Week 2025. It’s both a technical and aesthetic achievement, featuring a new movement. The skeletonisation process is extremely time-consuming, but it’s in direct response to the wishes of our clients and collectors.

Is the El Primero name still a valuable asset for Zenith in 2025?

El Primero is more than just an asset; this iconic movement is practically synonymous with Zenith. Its reputation is global and its performance remains one of the cornerstones of our brand. For all our clients, El Primero represents dependability; it sends a strong message about reliability and technical excellence – values they deeply appreciate.

The Chronomaster Rainbow is an unexpected offering from Zenith. Is this tied to the 160th anniversary celebrations?

Yes, this distinctive gem-set piece is indeed part of our 160th anniversary collection, and it also follows in the footsteps of a similar model in rose gold that we launched in 2024, whose remarkable success led us to explore other options in a similar vein. Demand for last year’s piece far exceeded supply, so we’ve created this new variation to meet that enthusiasm. We’re anticipating a very positive response to this anniversary model and are aiming to increase production slightly to satisfy demand.

If you could create any watch for Zenith, what would it be?

It’s already happening! Zenith’s strength lies in our ability to balance authenticity, innovation, heritage and expertise with a modern approach. We’re channelling all of these elements into our 160th anniversary celebrations, particularly through a new 2025 model that we’ll unveil at Watches & Wonders. The word “revelation” would not be inappropriate here, although some of our clients probably already have some idea of what’s in store! Zenith’s history has been built up step by step, and this commemorative piece is our contribution to that legacy.

What are Zenith’s goals for 2025?

Like most of the watch industry, we’ve faced some turbulence in recent months, although having an integrated manufacture has helped us navigate our way through. Our 2025 goal is to maintain focus on our core priorities while leveraging our 160th anniversary. We have some exciting projects planned that showcase Zenith’s authenticity and expertise. While Zenith is not the only centenarian watchmaker, we are unique in that we’ve occupied the same premises for 160 years, continuing to produce watches throughout that time. Visitors can still see the original furniture and tools from our founding era, making our manufacture truly one-of-a-kind.

What can we expect from Zenith at Watches & Wonders?

Don’t expect glitter or fireworks – that’s not our style. Watches & Wonders is undoubtedly an important event for us, especially as we’ll be celebrating our 160th anniversary there. Our booth will be similar to last year’s, emphasising our craftsmanship and encouraging visitors to come and experience our manufacture first-hand, for a truly unforgettable experience. We’ll be presenting four new products, including commemorative limited editions to mark this significant milestone.
