What a Year!

Just under 400 days ago, on behalf of the entire GMT and WorldTempus teams, I had the pleasure of wishing you a wonderful new year. In the grand scheme of things, 400 days is both a blink of an eye and a significant passage of time – especially when compared to the 400-year history of watchmaking.

Still, it pales in comparison to the current scientific debate about the age of Saturn’s rings: some claim they’re 400 million years old, while others argue for 4.5 billion. Even IWC’s Portugieser Eternal Calendar – the 2024 GPHG Aiguille d’Or winner with a mathematical accuracy of 45 million years – can’t quite match that scale.

Here at WorldTempus and GMT Publishing, we’ve kept our feet firmly on the ground while pouring all our energy into igniting your imagination throughout the year. What a year 2024 has been! We launched our very own audiovisual production department, which has brought you highlights from Watches and Wonders, Geneva Watch Days and our inaugural GMT Watch Safari. This new immersive event – which saw readers from the US, UK, France, Sweden and Switzerland tour ten watch brands in five days – was such a hit that participants are already calling for a second edition in late October 2025.

Our cultural and educational mission also gained momentum with the release of the fifth volume in the Millennium Watch Book series, this time focusing on travel watches. It’s not too late to treat yourself – or someone else – to a copy and delve deeper into this fascinating world of GMT and worldtimer watches. Additionally, this year saw the publication of our first-ever qualitative study on the challenges and trends in the watch industry. Conducted by our partner M&BD Consulting, this study formed the basis of an 80-page report, which was turned into a GMT special edition that we made available to you, our readers.

At the heart of our passion and our mission to share watch knowledge is, of course, the daily creation of articles about the timepieces that capture our attention most. You’re reading the very first article of 2025, and if 2024 is anything to go by – when we published no fewer than 1,305 articles – you can look forward to plenty more! This unwavering creativity and pace have made WorldTempus the most-read bilingual watch news site in the world.

As Piaget celebrated its 150th anniversary and Breitling its 140th in 2024, the year ahead promises to shine even brighter with a dazzling array of milestone celebrations. In 2025, we’ll be marking Blancpain’s 290th, Vacheron Constantin’s 270th, Breguet’s 250th, A. Lange & Söhne’s 180th, Zenith’s 160th, Reuge’s 160th, Audemars Piguet’s 150th and Rolex’s 120th anniversaries. Expect a flurry of launches to accompany these festivities, all of which we’ll cover in detail on WorldTempus.

Starting January 21, the spotlight will shine on Los Angeles as WorldTempus attends LVMH Watch Week, bringing you the first look at the exciting new releases showcased under the Californian sun.
