As you might have heard (unless you were living under a rock for the past six months), the new movie about Barbie came out this summer and has everyone losing their minds. Literally. A few months ago, the first pictures of Margot Robbie in the car (you know what I am talking about), Ryan Gosling posing (nearly shirtless) as Ken, and of the two of them roller-skating in Venice Beach almost broke the Internet.
And the excitement around the movie has only grown since its release! It’s all over social media and the news - thousands upon thousands of posts, pictures, memes, videos and articles… And it’s even out in the real world – pink seems to be making a major comeback, with countless people dressing in funky Barbie-like fashion everywhere you turn.
I was lucky enough to experience the excitement first-hand when I went to watch the feature on its premiere in Switzerland. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything for those of you who haven’t seen it yet – all I will say is it was quite the experience and I highly recommend it!
However, while scrutinizing the film, I couldn’t help but notice that all of the Barbie’s wrists were shockingly bare. Naturally, I couldn’t resist the urge and decided to honor Barbie the best way a watch journalist can: by giving her a watch! So, with the help of my editorial colleagues, I have carefully selected one timepiece for each and every single Barbie. I would like to mention that, just as it is emphasized in the movie, these Barbies are not just pretty little things to gawk at – they have big aspirations, interesting personalities and impressive careers. Hence, the watches had to be technically interesting, too, and were selected to reflect their Barbie’s individuality. Furthermore, as the Kens are not the main characters in Barbie World, we decided to focus on the women in the movie - the real superstars. (We still included Ken, because come on, it is Ryan Gosling after all!)
Without further ado, here’s our selection!
1. Barbie (Margot Robbie): Bovet 1822 Only Watch Special Edition Orbis Mundi
What better timepiece to represent THE Barbie, than a one-of-a-kind masterpiece? Crafted with a 42mm case in lustrous 18k red gold, this unique manual winding manufacture movement watch features a striking Magenta Guilloche base dial (composed of seven meticulously hand-applied layers) and a remarkable seven-day power reserve. Complete with the shape of full lips at the bottom of the dial (that could not be more fitting!), this piece reflects the adventurous spirit of Barbie, as she embarks on her journey to the Real World, with its intuitive world time display. The only feature missing is a Barbieland time zone!

2. Ken (Ryan Gosling): TAG Heuer Carrera Date (Pink)
This one was a no-brainer. Not only is Ryan Gosling an ambassador for the brand, but the timepiece’s dial’s bold and vibrant pink screams #kenergy. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders in March, this 36mm watch captured hearts with its newly streamlined silhouette, upgraded movement and new tapered bracelet design. No need for further proof that pink suits any occasion, let it be rollerblading, breaking into song, beaching or whatever else Kens do (no one really seems to know!).

3. Mermaid Barbie (Dua Lipa): Bulgari Meditteranean Giardino Marino Grande
I don’t think there could be a more perfect match even if we dreamed it! Crafted with over 3,900 hours of work, this high jewelry secret watch is a true showstopper, that showcases an exceptional display of fish, shells, corals, and decorated pearls meticulously created from more than 4,800 colorful precious gemstones. Beyond its breathtaking exterior, the ultimate treasure lies behind the central fish— in the form of the brand’s Piccolissimo movement. Measuring only 12 mm in diameter and weighing merely 1.30 grams, this micromechanical marvel powers the hours and minutes of the watch. It is a treasure of the marine world for our beloved Mermaid Barbie!

4. President Barbie (Issa Rae): Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 Pink Opal
For this Barbie, the choice became pretty clear early on. A Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, just like the watch worn by her (unfortunately majoritarian) male counterparts in the Real World. The iconic and quintessential presidential watch is immediately recognizable and commands a presence. With its fluted bezel and appropriately named President bracelet, the 36mm self-winding timepiece makes a simple yet clear statement of authority and leadership. But because she is a Barbie, after all, why not throw in a little pink opal and sparkle?

5. Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon): Bell & Ross BR 03 Cyber Rainbow Only Watch 2023
Next comes the fun one. We can all reminisce about having a Weird Barbie, the one we experimented with, dressing her in mismatched outfits and giving her unfortunate Sharpie tattoos as well as questionable haircuts (how could we possibly think it would look good!?). She lived on the wild side of our closets, where our imagination knew no limits and our ideas blossomed. We can find that same spirit of creativity and uniqueness in Bell & Ross’s BR 03 Cyber Rainbow Only Watch 2023. With its eye-catching and colorful mosaic patterns and a fully 3D skeletonized movement, it is a true (and unique) marvel to behold. As it is made from robust black DLC titanium, this timepiece can resist just about anything, much like our beloved Weird Barbie, who, despite the scratches and rough edges, remains an enduring symbol of fun and creativity!

6. Physicist Barbie (Emma Mackey): Gucci G-Timeless Planetarium
Dancing and flying pink diamonds!? You heard that right! This Gucci G-Timeless Planetarium watch is a captivating marvel that would be a perfect fit for physicist Barbie. Just like a physicist’s world revolves around celestial wonders and the mysteries of the universe, this high watchmaking timepiece’s dial showcases a mesmerizing celestial display, punctuated with twinkling rubies, fire opals, pink tourmaline and mandarin garnet, which together encircle and orbit the tourbillon in the center, in kaleidoscopic fashion, thanks to a start and stop function on the crown. A seamless blend of art and science!

7. Doctor Barbie (Hari Nef): Blancpain Ladybird Colors
Although doctors technically cannot wear watches on duty, it would be a shame for Doctor Barbie not to have one! With its small seconds hand, the Blancpain Ladybird Colors would be the perfect timepiece for her, as she could easily check Ken's pulse and ensure he was okay after yet another beaching incident (those who know, will know!). And even if it were her companion only during leisure time, it would make a subtle (yet beautiful) reminder of her heart for helping others.

8. Writer Barbie (Alexandra Shipp): Van Cleef Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier
Next, we thought the Van Cleef Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier would be the perfect muse for romantic and creative Writer Barbie. Should inspiration wane, she can simply turn to her wrist to ignite her creativity - with a gentle push of the button on the crown, this enchanting timepiece comes to life in a poetic spectacle. The three-dimensional dial reveals the passage of time through the graceful opening and closing of 12 corollas. Each hour, as the flowers blossom and close, the dial's scenery renews itself, providing endless inspiration… A writer’s dream come true!

9. Lawyer Barbie (Sharon Rooney): Breguet Reine de Naples Rose (8918)
The Breguet Reine de Naples would complement Lawyer Barbie's powerful presence in the courtroom and her unwavering determination to seek justice. As a lawyer, Barbie understands the importance of a more traditional and conservative appearance in court, and this hand guilloché rose gold watch strikes the ideal balance between professionalism and style. With its subtle yet captivating pop of pastel pink, the 118-diamond gem-set self-winding timepiece adds a touch of flair to her attire, mirroring her confidence and (dare I say) badassness. No objections, your Honour!

10. Diplomat Barbie (Nicola Coughlan): Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades Co-Axial Master Chronometer 34mm
As a diplomat representing a nation, this Barbie’s duty is to serve with a poised and composed demeanor. But who says you can’t look stylish, too? With its minimalist design, the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades subtly enhances Diplomat Barbie's character, without drawing excessive attention to herself, while still packing a punch. Powered by the Master Chronometer Calibre 8800 boasting a five-year warranty, the polished stainless steel timepiece ensures impeccable precision, which allows Diplomat Barbie to navigate international relations with tact and finesse.

11. Judge Barbie (Ana Cruz Kayne): Patek Philippe Calatrava 4997/200R
For the esteemed Judge Barbie, the Patek Philippe Calatrava 4997/200R would be the epitome of elegance and sophistication on and off the bench. This exquisite marvel is housed in a stunning rose gold case adorned with a diamond-set bezel, while the rich purple hue of the dial – achieved through layers of translucent lacquer – creates a captivating depth effect. Powering the timepiece is the ultra-thin self-winding Caliber 240, symbolizing the precision and meticulousness that Judge Barbie upholds in her pursuit of justice. With this sumptuous timepiece on her wrist, she exudes confidence and grace, embodying the timeless blend of sophistication and authority.

12. Journalist Barbie (Ritu Arya): MB&F LM Flying T Coeur de Rubis
And last but not least, the MB&F LM Flying T Coeur de Rubis for journalist Barbie. I had to save my favorite for last, as this would technically be a watch for myself - if I were a Barbie. Just like any good journalist, she is passionate about uncovering captivating stories and unraveling mysteries, making this technically complex watch the ultimate timepiece. Boasting a central flying 60-second tourbillon, a three-dimensional case featuring a 50° inclined dial, conical gears and a four-day power reserve, this precision-engineered piece will have her mesmerized for days on end.

Now with all of these magnificent timepieces in mind, it’s time to race over to the movie theater, grab a big bucket of popcorn and enjoy the show! I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
