The first thing that catches your eye with the Behrens Starship II is its black structured concave-shaped dial enhanced with coloured luminescent numerals and markings that match the colour of the rubber strap. Although space-inspired, the Starship II is also made for the water with 100 metres of water resistance, making it a fully-fledged sports watch. The second most striking factor about the Starship II is its price. At CHF 2,320, you will be hard pushed to find something equally cool for the price, even 10 times the price to be honest. For watch lovers who are looking for an affordable timepiece that offers something completely different, the Behrens is a very strong contender.

You’ve got to hand it to Behrens; they always manage to come out with something interesting, both mechanically and visually, even with the simplest time-only watches that they offer. The Starship II is an hours-minutes-seconds timepiece, with the hours indicated by a rotating ring (read from a fixed marker), while central hands indicate the minutes and seconds. Whilst ostensibly a sports watch and presumably to be worn during the day, its most spectacular side emerges after dark, when its luminous hands and numerals come out to shine.

Coming straight from outer space, the Behrens Starship II lands in Marathon, Greece! Decidedly futuristic, this model boasts a three-dimensional openworked dial, a testament to its extraterrestrial DNA. A rubber bracelet is attached, matching the epidermal colour of some alien gentleman (at least in the model I selected), reinforcing the experimental, sci-fi side of the watch. To crown it all, the luminous material on the dial evokes the lights emitted by flying saucers, providing a strong aesthetic consistency throughout the watch.

Everyday watch or unidentified horological object? Probably a bit of both! Visually, the Starship II is unequivocally inspired by a spaceship, with its round case topped by a dome crystal, its openworked three-dimensional dial and luminescent indications. But behind this futuristic aesthetic, the Starship II is a watch that is a pleasure to wear every day, in every situation. Extremely comfortable and colorful, with a highly original and instinctive display of hours, minutes and seconds, it is also water-resistant to 100 meters. This is indicated on the case back, along with an engraving of a white Chinese dolphin. An invitation to dive into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.

I will admit, with its futuristic-looking dial and colorful strap, the Behrens Starship II is clearly not a watch for everyone. But for those of you who believe that life is too short for blending in, you are in for a treat! I had the pleasure of flaunting this 42mm timepiece around multiple times during our week in Greece, and I couldn’t help but notice passerby’s gazing at my wrist, which made me feel like a real trendsetter. More practically, reading the time on the unconventional three-dimensional dial is, like my friend Sébastien from Skippers pointed out whilst we were strolling around Athens, surprisingly easy and intuitive. And I have to hand it to them: the rubber strap is so incredibly comfortable; you can take it literally anywhere. For example, on your next diving trip, thanks to its water resistance up to 100m!
