I have been wearing this watch on and off for a week now and I am starting to wonder if there isn’t some golden ratio magic or mathematical witchcraft going on with its geometry dial because it is just irresistible. Even from across a room, it has some magnetic force that makes you want to pick it up, put it on and possibly run off into the Greek sunset. It could also be our current location on the shores of the Aegean Sea that is accentuating the curves and lines of its geometrical, textured dial. Either way, the Schwarz Etienne speaks to me with its comfortable 39 mm stainless steel case (a size that is going to cause a fight between the sexes) and blue leather strap. It is powered by a beautifully finished automatic movement with a micro-rotor, which is also a sight to behold. What more can I say? This timepiece is definitely going on my wish list!

I had a brief out-of-body experience while wearing this watch. Although I continually rhapsodise about timepieces and go to (some might say) hyperbolic lengths when attempting to describe how I feel about them, it’s still relatively rare that they cause me to mentally dissociate from the present moment. The Schwarz Etienne Geometry did that, and I have to say that the location might have had something to do with it too. I was standing amidst the ruins of an ancient Greek fortress city, delivering an on-camera discourse about the Grecian origins of geometry (Euclid, Pythagoras and the rest of that gang). Just as I bent my head to look at the complex dial guillochage, the watch shimmered before my eyes and I suddenly felt the weight of all the history around me, felt it in a physical, almost visceral sense. The Eric Giroud-designed dial of the Schwarz Etienne Geometry is said by the brand to convey a spiralling sense of dimension and time, and I not only observed it with my eyes, I also experienced it with my mind.

“WOW!” was the first thing I thought to myself when I saw this watch. The guilloché work — or rather, the various types of guilloché work — on the dial is simply sublime. Made of 18k gold with a silvered finish, the dial plays with the light in a plethora of ways and is enhanced by a small-seconds indication on a blue subdial that adds an extra dose of pizzazz. Deconstructed yet structural, the dial offers an unusual geometry, elevating this timepiece to the level of art.

I have never excelled in scientific subjects, let alone/even less so in geometry. But that hasn't stopped my eye from appreciating the right proportions, delighting in harmonious shapes or reveling in the pure elegance of a graphic motif. Proof of this is this/Queue the Geometry model from Schwarz Etienne. To design it, the brand called on watchmaking genius Éric Giroud, who deconstructed one by one the trajectory of the concentric arcs and ridges that divide the dial into four quarters. Fluted, azuré, sandblasted and adorned with clous de Paris, this hand-guilloché gold dial plays with light and shadow with every movement/flick of the wrist. This contemporary graphic design is based on traditional craftsmanship and evokes the curved lines of an ancient Greek theater, with its masterful science of shapes and proportions.

I would like to begin my review with the simple statement that I absolutely love this watch. This way, we’re all on the same page, right away. I mean, it’s silly, really. I felt like a giddy teenager when I first laid my eyes on Schwarz Etienne’s Geometry. And don’t get me started on when I was actually able to get my hands on it. We were on this beautiful sailboat, out on the Aegean Sea, surrounded by postcard-worthy vistas, but my attention was focused on my wrist. My eyes would keep going back to the 39mm stainless steel case (which just so happened to fit me perfectly); they were so drawn by the gorgeous destructured 18ct gold dial motifs - hand guilloche, no less. Naturally, I had to document this pivotal moment and colour-coordinated my outfit to match the dark blue leather strap. And took only a thousand pictures (for your benefit, of course)!
